Privacy policy

What Strandline knows about you

Almost nothing, and this page explains exactly what.

The short version. There is no Strandline account and no Strandline server. We do not collect, store or transmit anything that identifies you. The app has no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind. The only information that ever leaves your phone is a location coordinate, sent to a weather service to fetch a forecast.

What stays on your phone

All of it. Specifically:

None of this is backed up to us, because there is no us to back it up to. Delete the app and it is gone.

What leaves your phone

Three requests, to two public bodies and one meteorological institute. None of them carry an account, a device identifier, an advertising ID, or anything else that could identify you or your phone.

Sent toWhat is sentWhy
MET NorwayA latitude and longitude, rounded to four decimal placesTo fetch the wind, temperature and UV forecast for that spot
Environment AgencyA tide gauge identifierTo read the live sea level
Environment AgencyA bathing water identifierTo read water quality and today’s pollution risk

The identifiers are public references to places, not to people. A request says “what is the water quality at Lancing Beach Green”, never “what is this person doing”.

Location

Strandline asks for your location only when you tap Beaches near me. If you decline, everything else still works and you pick a beach from the list instead.

When you do use it, the coordinate is used to sort the beach list by distance and to request a forecast. It is not stored on your device, not sent to us, and not retained anywhere. It exists for the duration of the request.

It is rounded to four decimal places, roughly eleven metres, before being sent. That is precise enough for a forecast and no more.

What we do not do

Children

Strandline is suitable for all ages and collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have rights to access, correct and erase personal data held about you. We hold none, so there is nothing to request. If you believe otherwise, write to us and we will look into it properly.

Third party policies

The services the app contacts have their own policies: MET Norway and the Environment Agency. Purchases are handled entirely by Apple.

Changes

If this policy ever changes materially, the app will say so. This version: 24 August 2026.
